Food for thought
What is photography
I find myself sat asking myself this very question, some people consider photography a means to document what they have seen or encountered, what better way to remember than to have a photography and as we all know a photograph can not lie.
Others and I class myself as one of them, see photography as a means to be artistic a way to create something special, to capture a little bit of beauty or even create one. When I began my photography journey I kept reading complicated terms like composition and exposure. The one that captured my imagination and intrigued me the most was “make an image”
To make an image left me feeling confused so much so I googled the term and it seemed it meant take a photo: as I began to watch video after video teaching myself I discovered anyone can point a camera and press a button, but it takes someone creative to “make an image”
Making an image involves lots of different aspects. It’s taking a step to the right to create a leading line, it’s waiting for the light to shine on the hillside or slowing the shutter speed to smooth out fast moving water. Making an image is actually creating a piece of artwork, taking the best of what you have available in front of you and enhancing it to produce something breathtaking.
Professional photographers can take up to a full day to source a location, await the perfect conditions and seek out the best compositions for the shot, they they seize the moment and quite often walk away with one image but usually what an image that turns out to be!
Conclusion
My interpretation of photography is that real photography is licence to express your creativity in the hope of creating a long lasting piece of artwork that will be admired by many. In typing this I am aware many will disagree because there is an argument to suggest as long as the photographer is happy with the image produced it doesn’t matter what other people think of it. I will finish with something you have heard before photography if nothing else is subjective and holds different meaning for everyone.
